U.S. News and World Report Rankings

U.S. News and World Report annually ranks udergraduate, graduate, professional, and specialty schools in 31 academic disciplines. In their most recent survey of graduate schools, Purdue Engineering ranked sixth overall and Industrial Engineering was ranked second.

Professor W. Dale Compton assumed the post of Interim Head of the School of Industrial Engineering July 1, 1998, when former head, Marlin U. Thomas became an Assistant Dean of the Schools of Engineering at Purdue University.

Dr. Compton joined the School in 1988 after accepting the position of Lillian M. Gilbreth Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering. At Purdue, he teaches graduate level courses in Production Management Control. Dr. Compton earned his B.A. from Wabash College in 1949, his M.S. from the University of Oklahoma in 1951 and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1955.

He was a Research Physicist for the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1961 and a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois from 1961 until 1970. He was Director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory at UICU from 1965-1970. In 1970, he became the Director of Chemical and Physical Sciences Laboratory for the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. From 1973 until 1986 Dr. Compton was the Vice President of Research for Ford Motor Company. Dr. Compton was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1981 and became the Senior Fellow of the NAE in 1986.

Dr. Compton is currently Chairman of the National Research Council Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems and serves on numerous national and university advisory committees.
